INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW
Derek Stephenson
Jessica Cook
Wadley Farms
Wedding Consultant/Event Planner
Q: How did you get your job as an Event Planner? A: I graduated from UVU for years ago with a degree in sociology and haven’t used my actual degree yet. I took a part time position at Wadley Farms and one thing led to another and here I am.
Q: Would you say you’ve learned this position strictly on the job? A: Yes, and from everyday experience. This job is %100 customer service. We have high paying customers that demand perfection on their wedding day.
Q: Is this job stressful? A: Yes, very stressful. For the most part brides are happy and having a good time and other times you get bridezilla who can’t be reckoned with. These kind of customers can be hard to please.
Q: What about this job do you find satisfying? A: I love meeting and working with new people everyday. I also enjoy planning and being a part of such a special day in people’s lives. A wedding day for most people is one of the most memorable days in their lives.
Q: Is there future potential or opportunity for your position? A: Yes, the wedding business is a big deal in Utah County. I am gaining valuable skills that could lead me into many different fields. I am also gaining valuable customer service skills.
Q: What kind of skills do you look for in a potential employee? A: Wadley farms is looking for someone with excellent customer service skills. Another valuable skill is someone who can think fast and solve problems fast.
Q: What are some of the crazy situations you face on a daily basis? A: Problems arise every day at every wedding. Weather someone spills a drink on a wedding dress or bad weather moves in, anything can happen and you have to be able to adapt and solve problems at a moments notice.
Q: Do you enjoy your job? A: Yes, very much. I can see myself working as a wedding coordinator /event planner for a long time. I am very happy doing this and planning on expanding my talents into more avenues of the wedding business.
I really learned a lot in conducting this interview. I am learning and exploring many different career opportunities and this was a valuable learning experience. When I was preparing for this interview I decided that I wanted to ask the questions that I felt would be most important in trying to convey the actual day to day experience in the particular job. I had no idea how stressed out a wedding planner job can be. I really enjoyed my time at Wadley Farms and I think I will pursue more information and try to gain future employment as an event coordinator.
